The Union Government has launched the regional air connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) which seeks to get more people to fly in the smaller towns 

What is UDAN?

UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) is an initiative by the government to connect the country’s under-served and unserved airports. Under the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), in this five airlines have won bids to operate on 128 routes which will be connecting 70 airports. Out of 70 the airports, 31 are unserved and 12 under-served.

Highlights of the UDAN Scheme: - 

• This scheme is a component of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) 
• The UDAN scheme aims to stimulate regional connectivity with flights covering distances up to 800 km 
• 43 cities are expected to be mainstreamed on India’s flight connectivity grid. 
• Air India’s subsidiary Alliance Air will be the first airline to start operating flights between Delhi and Shimla under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).
• So far, 19 States and three union territories have signed a MoU for this purpose.
• Five airlines — Alliance Air, Spice Jet, Turbo Megha, Air Odisha and Air Deccan — were awarded 128 routes under the scheme after a bidding process. 
• Hyderabad-Cuddapah, Hyderabad-Nanded, Nanded-Mumbai, Chennai-Mysuru, Chennai-Salem, Mumbai-Porbandar, Kolkata-Aizwal, Pune-Nashik, Delhi-Dehradun, and Ranchi-Raipur are some of the other proposed routes.
